Gender has a huge influence in sports, as participation and achievements of individuals in different activities have a tendency to vary according to gender. This can be explained by the fact that physical abilities differ across people according to several factors, including sex. When it comes to physical abilities, gender is far from being the only component that plays a role, as varied anatomical parameters, level of experience, physique, force applied and more affect performance. However, that does not mean that gender does not cause differences.

Men tend to have more muscle mass, so they can lift heavier weights with greater ease. In contrast, women have a lower percentage of body fat and tend to have more body fat in the lower body, which can be beneficial for sports that require more agility than strength.

Moreover, testosterone is a significant factor that distinguishes males from females. This hormone is responsible for the development of the secondary sexual characteristics that distinguish the two genders, such as deep voices, body hair and greater muscle mass. Additionally, testosterone is proven to help with strength and muscle development, so it is usually an advantage for men in certain competitive sports.

The Benefit of an Inclusive Approach in Sports

Having an atmosphere where people can participate according to their own preferences and capabilities can bring several benefits. It is essential to understand the physical capabilities of both genders in order to build up an inclusive team. For example, if male athletes are used mainly for strength-based events, more female athletes should be included for agility-based contests. Moreover, some bridges should be built by setting up specific rules for different genders that increase fairness.

Additionally, if we focus on creating an environment where people can express and develop their athleticism without being judged by their gender, more individuals can reach success. More teams and coaches should create atmospheres where members can find inspiration and motivation instead of fear of failure.
